Hauptwache Haarlem
The Hauptwache Haarlem ( Dutch Hoofdwacht ) is a building from the 13th century in the North Holland city of Haarlem , on Grote Markt 17. It served first as the town hall, then as a residential and commercial building and since 1755 as the headquarters of the city militia . As a Rijksmonument , it has been a listed building since 1969.
history
The oldest parts of the building date from the middle of the thirteenth century; it is considered to be one of the oldest stone houses in Haarlem. After the town hall had moved to the current building in 1350, it served as a residential and commercial building; u. a. the lower floors and cellars were used as a beer warehouse and printing shop. The scholar Dirck Volkertszoon Coornhert also lived here for a while.
In 1755 the city acquired the building and occupied it with officers of the militia, later relieved by other military or police facilities. In 1919 the Historische Vereniging Haerlem , the Haarlem History Society , took over the building as the club's headquarters.
On the occasion of the 750th anniversary of the city, the Hoofdwacht was restored in 1994/1995. In addition to the association's headquarters, it now serves as a museum (as of 2013).
