history

The Schifferhaus , an inn, used to stand here . This house was named as early as 1810 and belonged u. a. 1845 JJ Schlehbohm, 1849 August Dölle and 1873 a real estate company. The house was demolished around 1885/86.

The four-storey, very differentiated historicizing building from 1886 with several gable projections , loggias and balconies was built as the Hotel Continental for Sede Balsen († 1909). It had 48 guest rooms. Balsen was captain, ship owner and later mayor of Cuxhaven. He ran the hotel until 1900 and sold the house to Helgoland Ohlsen. A veranda was added in 1902 and removed again around 1920. Around 1919 the city bought the property, which was administered by the Cuxhaven municipal settlement cooperative and furnished apartments for fishing steamer captains and pilot families. After the Second World War , the house fell into disrepair.

In 2007/08 the house was renovated by the Cuxhaven settlement company and equipped with holiday apartments according to plans by Wolf-Rüdiger Eisentraut (Berlin); it got a penthouse and again a veranda. Since then, the Haus Continental restaurant has existed on the ground floor .
