history

The first written mention of the name was in 1386, when the squire Johann Budel from his court gave an annual payment to the Erprath of the church in Xanten. The castle was built around 1356 by Budel's father, the knight Johann Budel von Dorrenwald. From the beginning it was a Klevian knight's seat, as can be seen from the aforementioned document. The ownership of the house in the 15th century is unclear, but in 1517 it was owned by Johann von Wylich zu Dorrenwald and Vehn. After numerous changes of ownership, Caspar Richard Hundebeck, a regimental commander from Brandenburg , bought the property and had it expanded. By inheritance, Erprath's house came to the von Haeften family in 1768, who also owned the house in the 19th century. During the Second World War, the property , which had meanwhile been converted into a baroque mansion , was completely destroyed. The building was rebuilt from the old stones, has been preserved and is in private use.
