The House of Young Talents , also briefly only talent called, is a cultural center in Magdeburg in Saxony-Anhalt . At times the building was listed as a listed building .

location

It is located in Magdeburg's old town on the north side of Erich-Weinert-Straße at the address Erich-Weinert-Straße 25. Immediately to the west is the railway line from Magdeburg to Leipzig . A little to the east is the AMO Culture and Congress House .

Architecture and history

The building was erected in 1914 as a youth home and an extension to the Jahn gymnasium. A central section with an almost square floor plan and two wings adjoining the west and east sides were created. Overall, the floor plan of the ensemble forms an elongated rectangle. The central building rises significantly above the side wings and is covered by a mansard hipped roof. The southwest wing is three-storey and also has a mansard hipped roof. A large hall with a stage is housed in this wing. The northeastern significantly shorter wing has two floors and is surrounded by a gable roof crowned.

During the National Socialist era , the building was owned by the city of Magdeburg. Several National Socialist youth associations were located in the house operated as a Franke youth home with the address at that time Werner-Fritze-Strasse 25 , such as the Upper District of the Association of German Girls and the ban 231 of the Hitler Youth . The Jahn gym was used by the Hitler Youth area 23 (Middle Elbe) and the MTV 1848 eV.

The Jahn gym was destroyed during the Second World War . It was replaced by a kitchen wing in 1948, which was torn down again in 2003. The building, which was used as a cultural center during the GDR era , has been empty since around the 1990s.

On August 3, 1995 it was entered as a monument in the monument register. A later review, however, revealed that the building did not meet the legal requirements for a cultural monument due to major deformations. The deletion from the monument register took place on March 28, 2003.

The building is privately owned. The owner should intend to demolish it, although it is unclear whether the area can be re-used. Against a demolition there were repeated initiatives in the Magdeburg city council.
