Haus Katz or also Katz Haus is a listed building located in the town of Jüchen in the Rhine district of Neuss in North Rhine-Westphalia . At that time, the building served the Duke of Jülich's bailiff ( Paulus von Katz ), who gave it his name, mainly as the administrative seat. Today the building, built around 1706, serves the city of Jüchen as a council chamber, exhibition room and meeting place. The municipality's registry office is also located here.

location

The house Katz is located in today's center of Jüchen. The neo-Gothic Catholic Church of St. Jakobus d. Ä. also the evangelical court church behind the houses on Jüchener Markt. During the Christmas season , Haus Katz already offered the Jüchen Christmas market a festive backdrop and is also the focal point for other festive events such as the shooting festival.

history

The main building of the predecessor of today's Haus Katz was used as a knight's seat and was probably located in the eastern area of today's manor house. A tower (roughly where the south-east tower stands today) should have towered over today's buildings a lot and was probably built in the style of a medieval keep. A smaller tower was on the northeast side of the building. The main entrance to the old facility is likely to have been on the northwest side. A bailey was presumably to the west of this manor house, another roughly in the area of the current one (with the northeast wing). The manor house and the southern bailey were protected by moats that were fed by the stream that now runs under the street through sewer pipes. The castle was probably built in the 16th century and expanded in the 17th century.

On the ruins of this ancient knight seat (last owner was knight Klutt ) built the bailiff of the Duke of Jülich of the Office Kaster , Paul Katz, at the beginning of the 18th century a seat of the court in the form of a baroque castle (about 6.17). The complex originally had two bailey and a mansion surrounded by moats, which is still preserved, as well as two wings of the southern bailey. Up until 1767, the facility was expanded and rebuilt several times. After the death of Johann Theodor Katz (without male heirs) the facility changed hands several times.

On January 29, 1973, the municipality of Jüchen acquired the Katz house for DM 105,000 (approx. 55,000 euros) to prevent the Onofrietti brothers from converting it into a factory. Since then, the baroque building has been used as a "parlor" for the community.

Renovations in 1917

The first extensive renovations were carried out on the Katz house after about 211 years.

Renovation 1978–1981

After it was acquired by the municipality in 1973, it was converted into an administration building between June 1978 and April 1981. The cost of the conversion amounted to 2.5 million DM (approx. 1.3 million euros). After the renovation, the property housed the council chamber, the registry office and the social welfare office of the community of Jüchen.

Renovations in 1980 and 2006

The first renovation took place in 1980 and the second in 2006. In both years, cracks were discovered on the main facade and the deficiencies corrected.

Renovation 2007–2009

In July 2009 the municipality of Jüchen completed an extensive two-year renovation.

The 300 year old walls, which stood on rotten piles, were no longer able to defy the laws of building physics. After the first cracks became apparent, action and renovation were no longer possible.

For the filling of the cavities in the basement with swelling concrete, the removal of the rotten wooden piles with simultaneous filling of the resulting cavities with a new type of hose system, the removal of the crack pattern as well as the subsequently necessary external painting with an open-pored special paint, 560,000 euros were required in the end. Since this sum could not be raised by the municipality alone, the Rhein-Kreis Neuss contributed 130,000 euros to the renovation project, as did the Düsseldorf district government with 87,000 euros from monuments subsidies. The renovation project was unique in this form.

Remodeling 2011

In 2011 the municipality of Jüchen started tenders to convert the building into a barrier-free area. The planned renovation should cost around 150,000 euros and be completed by December 2011. During the renovation, u. a. planned to enable access to the 1st floor via an elevator.
