House Wabbel (2019)

The Wabbel house at Margaretenweg 3 in Düsseldorf - Wittlaer was built in 1973 according to plans by Wolfgang Döring . According to Uwe Maas and Hermann Stappmann, it is characterized by the lack of supports in the 21 × 9.60 meter living hall.

description

The interior is a large hall with a cantilevered ceiling: "A 21 × 9.60 meter columnless hall spanned and glazed on two sides is a flexible use housing" The builders are a single couple with eight grandchildren who are often visiting. This also explains the need for the large living space on the ground floor. The interior room division is made by sliding walls. A spiral staircase leads to the couple's bedroom, which is set up as a small cube on the large-format hall below.

The exterior is determined by the steel structure placed on the outside: "It forms the basic module for the organization of the floor plan, which is characterized by the lack of supports and is therefore flexible." The dominant feature is the steel skeleton with lattice girders. The skeleton is painted red, covered with trapezoidal sheet metal and filled in with aluminum elements.
