House of Recreation in Ahlbeck, November 2010

The House of Recreation is a monument in the seaside resort of Ahlbeck on the island of Usedom in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania. The building at Dünenstrasse 37 on the Baltic Sea promenade served holidaymakers in the GDR times as a cultural and catering center.

The plastered building on the eaves was opened in May 1957 and has a rectangular floor plan. There is a roof lantern on the gable roof. A wide flight of stairs leads to the left, slightly protruding side of the house to the entrance portal, next to which there are three small windows. Two of the window openings are covered by a showcase to the right of the entrance. Six large, upright windows are arranged above the portal. The right part of the house is a hall with high rectangular lattice windows. All window and door frames are made of natural stone. On the landside facade there is a single-storey farm building as an extension, also with a rectangular floor plan and a gable roof. The decision to demolish this extension was taken in February 2019.

The purpose of the construction was to create a cultural center and a place to eat for the numerous FDGB vacationers. After the political change , the building was used as a cinema, discotheque and for events of the local carnival club until 2010. As of July 2012, the House of Recreation, especially the extension, shows signs of decay. The renovation and subsequent tourist use as a “House of Experiences” with tourist information and cinema is planned.
