The House of Trade Unions of Ukraine officially company "Economic Administration of the Federation of Trade Unions of Ukraine" ( Ukrainian Будинок профспілок України Budynok profspilok Ukraiiny ); is a large public building in the center of the Ukrainian capital Kiev .
A 24 m high clock tower with electronic time, date and temperature display has been located on the roof of the building since 1980 and was modernized in 2011. The building including the clock tower is 57 m high and is located on Khreshchatyk Boulevard number 18/2, corner of Majdan Nesaleschnosti . The structure burned down almost completely during the Euromaidan protests on February 19, 2014.
history
In place of the current building, the first stone building on the square, built by the architect Alexander Beretti, stood from 1860. It was sold to the Kiev nobility assembly in 1870, who used the upper floors while shops were located on the ground floor. In the Soviet era , this was the home of the Education Workers' Club before the building was demolished in the mid-1970s to make way for the current building. The current building was constructed between 1975 and 1980 and opened on June 27, 1980. The house was the headquarters of the Euromaidan activists from December 1, 2013 until the fire on February 19, 2014. It is not yet known whether a restoration of the union house will be possible. Among other things, a futuristic new building is planned.
