The House of the Great Guild ( Estonian Suurgildi hoone ) is a historical building in the Estonian capital Tallinn (Reval). The house also houses part of the Estonian Historical Museum .

location

The house is located in the center of the old town of Reval at the address Langstrasse ( Estonian Pikk tänav ) 17, directly opposite the confluence of the Weckengang ( Saiakang ).

Architecture and history

The late Gothic building was built in 1410 by the same master builders who built the Reval town hall . The simple facade of the building is structured by vertically aligned blind niches. It served as the guild house of the so-called Great Guild, in which the particularly influential long-distance merchants of Revals were united. Members of the guild could only be married wealthy merchants or goldsmiths who owned a house. Councilmen and mayors of Revals were at times only members of the Great Guild. The Great Guild existed from 1325 to 1920.

A wide variety of events were held in the building. Religious ceremonies, concerts, theatrical performances, as well as festivals and drinking bouts took place here. The main hall with its lavishly decorated pillars is remarkable.
