The long road ( Estonian Pikk tänav ) is a street in the Estonian capital Tallinn ( German  Reval ).

course

It runs from the Großer Strandpforte in the north in a south / south-westerly direction through the old town of Reval. The long street leads north near the town hall square (Estonian: Raekoja plats ) and then turns into the Long Toompea ( Pikk jalg ), which then continues to the southwest on the Toompea .

History and buildings

Langstrasse is one of the oldest streets in Reval and served as a connection between the port in the north through the old town to Toompea. The goods landed in the port were also brought to the packing houses or to the market via this street. The street name is documented as early as the 14th century.

The guild houses were built along Langstrasse, such as the house of the Great Guild (number 17), the house of the Canoe Guild (number 20), the house of the Olai guild (number 24) and the house of the Blackheads (number 26). Also noteworthy are the historic merchant's houses known as the Drei Schwestern (number 71), now used as a hotel, at the northern end of Langstrasse. The Great Beach Gate , which is part of the Reval city fortifications, is also located here , the Fat Margaret cannon tower and the Estonian Maritime Museum housed there .

Other important buildings along the street are the Swedish Embassy (number 28) and the Russian Embassy (number 19). During the Soviet Union, the regional headquarters of the KGB was located at number 59 on the corner of Bäckerstrasse ( Pagari ) .

Approximately centrally in the street is the former as a market, today as green space used Green market , including the small Russian Orthodox chapel at the green market . Opposite the house of the Great Guild, the well-known Weckengang alley opens at the Heiliggeistkirche located there .

At number 16 you will find the Café Maiasmokk, which has existed since 1864, and is the oldest surviving café in Revals.
