Architecture and history

The café on the two lower floors of a three-story listed building. In the Middle Ages there were at least two pieces of land on the site of the current building. In 1875 the German-Baltic confectioner Georg Johan Stude, who had owned a pastry shop in the neighborhood since 1864, bought the property and in 1876 had the current building built in the neo-Renaissance style by the architect T. Hamm , which shows representative facade designs on three sides. Parts of the historic interior have also been preserved. The painted stained glass ceiling in the café's rooms is remarkable. The café is considered to be the oldest in Estonia still in operation.

Stude ran the café with great success. The Estonian name Maiasmokk means something like gourmand or gourmet in German. Stude also produced marzipan here , which was also delivered to the Tsar's court in Saint Petersburg . With the resettlement of the Baltic Germans in 1939, the Stude family ended the business. The last business owner was Alexander Reinhold Stude. In 1940 the café was merged with other pastry shops and confectionery manufacturers and nationalized. From 1948 this company was operated under the name Kalev .

In addition to the café, which still exists today, with cakes and pastries in particular and a restaurant on the upper floor, there is a Martsipanituba (German: Marzipanstube) sales point for marzipan from Kalev. At the same time, the history of Revaler marzipan is presented there.

The house was registered as a monument on November 4, 1999 and is listed under number 8518 in the Estonian Register of Monuments .
