The Long Toompea is an extension of the Long Street (Estonian: Pikk ) through the gate on the Long Toomberg of the Reval city fortifications further south to the Toompea and there opens into the Schlossplatz ( Lossi plats ).

History and buildings

Alongside the Kurzen Domberg ( Lühike jalg ), which was only intended for pedestrians, the street was the only way from the Reval lower town to the Domberg, the upper town. A wall and two gate towers were built along the street in 1454 and 1455 built. Up until 1878, the upper and lower towns were separate towns, so that the road connected two independent towns. The city gates of both cities were also closed in the evening. The narrow, canal-like street due to the side walls required traffic regulation as early as the 18th century. Due to the narrowness, two-way vehicles could not pass, so there were guards at the lower and upper ends, who gave signals if a wagon passed.

The residence building of the German Embassy is located at the upper end at the confluence of the street on Schlossplatz .

The Estonian name Pikk jalg literally means long-legged .
