history

figural ornaments in the parapet fields, inscription on the portico
Wall structure in the stair hall

The building was built in 1925–1926 according to a design by the Hagen architect Ernst Kohlhage for the coal trading company “Mark” Siepmann, Schrader & Co. KG , which is reminiscent of the inscription on the portico flanked by the mining symbol mallet and iron .

With a neoclassical basic stance (strict cubature of the building, symmetrical facades with a colossal order above the basement , horizontal upper termination by a strong main cornice , wall articulations with pilasters in the staircase, etc.) , the architecture shows expressionistic details, the ornamental design of the clinker facade is reminiscent of contemporary brick expressionism .

The building was later used by Ruhrkohle AG , to which the name of the house in use today refers. After that it was the seat of various municipal authorities (Statistics Office, Forestry Office, Property Office, Civil Protection Office, Road Traffic Office), but all of them moved out again after a short time.

In 2013, the building was acquired by investors and a law firm , renovated or restored and converted into a service center. The law firm has been based in the Haus der Ruhrkohle since the beginning of 2014.
