The Haus der Stadtgeschichte - Stadtarchiv Ulm is the archive of the Baden-Württemberg city of Ulm .

history

The history of the Ulm Archives is closely linked to the formation of the township in the 12th and 13th centuries. The documents and imperial city privileges were looked after by the town clerks in the town hall since the late Middle Ages . With the emergence of a city administration in the late 15th century, extensive records and archives grew in Ulm, which required order. A new inventory to be created should allow an overview of the total inventory . The council of the imperial city of Ulm therefore hired the registrar Peter Mann on July 18, 1515 for the organization and indexing of the imperial city archives. He was the first archivist in Ulm who, just three years later , was able to present the first finding aid for the documents kept in the wheelhouse. Since 1609, the archivists were also charged with indexing the Ulm council minutes. Responsible for the entire city archives with a main archive in the wheelhouse, a chancellery archive in the town hall and the archives of the individual offices were since the 17th century the top city lawyers, the so-called councilors. In the course of the mediatization of Ulm and its incorporation into Bavaria (1802) and finally to Württemberg (1810), numerous archives from the imperial city were lost. An archivist was not hired again until 1837.

On October 1, 1908, the city archive, which was headed from 1898 to 1968 in personal union with the city library, moved into the Schwörhaus . A timely relocation of archive materials during the Second World War prevented major losses. The growing number of files soon created space problems. In 1989, the new branch of the city archives in the pioneer barracks could be moved into.

After most of the city library moved out of the Schwörhaus in 2004, the building was converted. The reopening took place on July 14, 2007, and the city archive was renamed “House of City History - City Archive Ulm”.

Michael Wettengel has been head of the city archives since 2002 and, as chief city archives director, head of the Haus der Stadtgeschichte - Stadtarchiv Ulm since 2007.
