The House of German Wine (HDW) is located in the old town of the Rhineland-Palatinate state capital Mainz .

Wine industry organizations

The HDW housed the German Wine Fund (DWF) and the German Wine Institute (DWI) until 2016 . Both represent the interests of the German wine industry . Their aim is to promote the quality and sales of German wines. The self-imposed goal should be achieved through joint marketing measures at home and abroad.

The DWI conducts seminars for further training of the winegrowers and the employees of wineries. The Federal Ministry of Food and Agriculture (BMEL, Bonn) acts as the responsible authority .

The German Wine Academy is also located in the HDW . The DWA is supposed to act as an intermediary between science, business and consumers. The Mainz Wine Study was initiated by the Academy on the subject of wine and health. It investigated the question: "How does the moderate but regular consumption of German red and white wine affect the number 1 disease, coronary heart disease?"

The building

The House of German Wine was built in 1957/58 in the center of the wine town of Mainz , in the immediate vicinity of the State Theater and the Gutenberg Monument . It is faced with gray natural stone and houses a few shops on the ground floor next to a restaurant. On the facade there are selected coats of arms from the German wine-growing regions. The opening took place on December 4, 1958. The construction costs of 1.25 million DM were shared by the state of Rhineland-Palatinate, the reconstruction fund of the Rhineland-Palatinate wine-growing regions, the Weinbauverband Rheinhessen, the Weinbauverband für die Rheinpfalz, the Bauern- und Winzerverband Rheinland - Nassau, the Deutsche Weinwerbung, the city of Mainz and the Association of Rheinhessischer Weinkaufen.
