history

The house was built on behalf of a dragoman , an interpreter, who had also been entrusted with the office of chief tax collector. Kornessios belonged to the Greek population, but had been installed in his office by the Ottoman Empire . This office brought him such a high income that, as a member of the upper class, he was able to have a very representative house built. Kornessios was also active as a consular for Western European countries, including Venice, which is why a plaque above the entrance of the house shows the lion of St. Mark . The three-wing building is grouped around an inner courtyard with a fountain, from which a covered wooden staircase leads to the entrance hall on the upper floor. The actual living rooms were on the first floor of the house. The bedroom was on the left after entering the entrance hall, directly opposite the Dīwān of the stairs. The Dīwān protrudes from the facade with its wooden bay window. The hammam still stands in a small outbuilding in the courtyard .

The villa had been declared a protected building since 1935. The building remained in the possession of his family for over 200 years, who at the end of the 19th century had divided up individual areas of the building to live in. In the 20th century, individual parts of the building and finally the entire ensemble passed into state ownership.
