House on Shore Street (Bowmore)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The residential and commercial building is located on Shore Street in Bowmore , the capital of the Scottish Hebridean island of Islay . It is at the west end of Shore Street, which is where the A846 runs through Bowmore. House numbers were not assigned in this part of the street. On July 20, 1971, the building was added to the Scottish List of Monuments in Category B.

description

The exact time of construction of the building has not been handed down, so that only the later 18th century can be given as the construction period. It is thus one of the early buildings of the planned town, founded around 1770, which were built near the coastline of Loch Indaal . The two-story building corresponds to the traditional construction. The house, built of quarry stone, has two entrance doors. These are framed by four windows on the ground floor and three on the upper floor. It ends with a slate-covered gable roof . The facades are plastered. A one-story extension with a loft was added at the rear. There is a spiral staircase with a semi-conical roof.
