Bridge House

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Bridge House is a building on the Scottish Hebridean island of Islay . It is about 50 m west of the A846 in a loop of the Laggan River . Bowmore , the main town on the island, is about 1.5 miles north and is the closest major town. On July 20, 1971, Bridge House was included in the Scottish List of Monuments in Category B as part of an ensemble . It has been listed as a single monument in Category C since 2006.

At first, Bridge House housed an inn. The rooms were then used as a school building. Directly west of Bridge House, the Laggan Bridge , which is also listed, leads over the Laggan.

description

The exact time of construction has not been recorded, so that only the early 19th century can be given as the construction period. The one-story building corresponds to the traditional construction. It ends with a gable roof . The top floor has been expanded into an attic and is equipped with dormers . In the east there is a lower extension with a gable roof. The entrance area is in front of a small porch crowned by a hipped roof . All roofs are covered with slate shingles and the facades are plastered using the traditional Harling technique.
