Laggan Bridge

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Laggan Bridge is a stone arch bridge over the Laggan on the Scottish Hebridean island of Islay . It is located about 40 m west of the A846 on a loop of the river. Bowmore , the main town on the island, is about 1.5 miles north and is the closest major town. On July 20, 1971, the Laggan Bridge was included in the Scottish List of Monuments in Category B as part of an ensemble . It has been listed as a single monument in category C since 2006.

Directly east of the Laggan Bridge is the also listed Bridge House , which was first used as a restaurant and then as a school building.

description

The exact time of construction of the bridge is not recorded, so that only the 18th century can be given as the construction period. The bridge was built from quarry stone. It consists of a single arch that crosses the narrow river. The roadway is limited on both sides by a flat guide wall. A short distance south, the road returns to the A846, so that the bridge now only serves as an entrance to Bridge House.
