The baroque house

The Haus zum Balustergarten , also known as the baroque house , is a former summer house that today stands in the middle of the Winterthur city garden . The house is under cantonal monument protection.

Surname

The name of the little house comes from the “house to the baluster tree ” in Winterthur's Marktgasse. The house was demolished in 1959 and today there is a C&A branch at its location.

history

The house was built by the Winterthur councilor Heinrich Steiner around 1740. At that time, many wealthy families outside the city walls had small, fenced-in gardens - most comparable to today's Pünten - in which they spent their free time. Small houses in these gardens were also not uncommon at that time.

After Heinrich Steiner's death, his widow sold the house to the city judge Heinrich Reinhart in 1819. This in turn sold it in 1863 to the mayor of Winterthur, Johann Jakob Sulzer . In 1887 the house was bought by the Winterthur councilor and industrialist Heinrich Rieter .

In 1919 the house was bought by the city of Winterthur together with the Merz-Rieter-Gut and was used from then on as an apartment for the caretaker of the Merz-Rieter-Gut. Together with the redesign of the city garden, the baroque house was renovated in 1950 and 1953 and provided with a public toilet. It can be rented for events today.
