The Haus zum Mohren (Czech: Dům U Mouřenína ) is a former residential building in the Moravian town of Svitavy (German: Zwittau) in the Czech Republic . The listed building is located on the city's central square, Náměstí Míru (literally Peace Square ).

history

The Haus zum Mohren is the neighboring house of the old town hall, with which it is connected by a corridor on the first floor. It was built in 1554 according to a Renaissance floor plan. Originally the families of the Zwittau mayors lived in the Haus zum Mohren, but it was converted into an inn in the 18th century and called the “Zum Mohren” inn. The origin of the name is unknown, there is a relief of a Moor on the corner of the building. When Emperor Joseph II visited Zwittau in 1776, he lived in this building.

The vaulted cellar was used as a safe for the city savings bank from 1861 onwards, due to its ability to defend itself . In the 20th century the house was converted into a shop and in the 1950s the old building fabric was destroyed when the interior was redesigned. Today the tourist office is housed in the building.
