history

The industrial plant at Fischbachstrasse 31–39 was built in 1913/14 and then gradually expanded. The client was the Elektrometallurgische Werke AG in Horrem. The industrial settlement was originally an aluminum smelter. Here, pure aluminum was made from alumina supplied by the Martinswerk. From 1926 Lurgi-Thermi GmbH took over the industrial plant. The new owner produced silumin here. At the time of the Second World War, this light metal alloy was an essential material for the aircraft industry.

In 1929 the plant employed a total of 90 people. By 1935 this number had risen to 300. The employees produced 12,000 tons of silumin annually. Production stopped after the war. English occupation troops first quartered here, which were then relieved by Belgian troops (until 1955). Havaria's administration moved into the administration building. In 1998, two buildings of the complex consisting of several buildings were placed under monument protection: The former villa-like administration building from 1913 and two halls connected by a wing with the gatehouse from 1913/16. Another warehouse, which measures 101 m in length and was built in 1915, was placed under monument protection in 2008.

monument

The houses on the Havaria site are registered with monument number 252 in the list of architectural monuments in Quadrath-Ichendorf . The description is as follows:

“The property is a manufacturing facility consisting of several buildings. The complex gets its intrinsic value from the high-quality, partially forward-looking design. The administration building, most committed to representation, designed conservatively as a villa, shows elements of Reformed historicism . The shape of the building with the porter's lodge is particularly “modern”. Objective forms, used appropriately, characterize this building. The large hall building is designed differently again. Its length required stronger structural elements, which in turn are based on a geometric grid. For both factory buildings, geometric shapes and precise outlines are used as adequate design elements for a technical system. "

Todays use

Until 2004, bankruptcy goods and articles from overproduction were sold in the Havaria stores. In 2004 the company had to close. Today other companies operate there.
