The Hawaiian Volcano Observatory is an institute for volcano research and one of the oldest volcano observatories worldwide. It is located in Hawaii on the crater rim of the Kilauea volcano , within sight of the Mauna Loa volcano .

The institute was founded in 1912 by Thomas A. Jaggar under the impression of the devastating eruption of the Montagne Pelée in 1902 with the motto “Ne plus haustae aut obrutae urbes” (“No more cities should be destroyed”). It is very recognized worldwide and, in addition to volcanic research, also deals with the subjects of gas geochemistry, geophysics , geology and seismology .
