Hayato-zuka

Hayato-zuka ( Japanese 隼 人 塚 , dt. "Hayato Tomb") is a Japanese religious building in Hayatochō- Uchiyamada, Kirishima , Kagoshima Prefecture .

The plant should not be confused with the Hayato-zuka Kofun in Yukuhashi .

description

The basis of the approximately 50 m² facility is a 15 m long and 2 m high rectangular hill made of tuff stone . On this there are three five-tier stone pagodas ( 五 重 石塔 , gojū sekitō ), the middle and largest being 2.5 m high, as well as a statue of the Shitennō - the Buddhist four kings of heaven - as protective gods ( Lokapala ) at each corner .

history

The complex was built in the late Heian period and the stone pagodas resemble those of the pagodas of the nearby provincial temple ( kokubunji ) of Ōsumi , dated 1142/3 , which is why it is assumed that the complex dates from the same period.

Their meaning is unknown, although it is commonly believed to be the remains of a Buddhist temple, e.g. B. the provincial temple of the nuns ( kokubunniji ), also with regard to the similarities with the mentioned provincial temple (the monks). Another theory is that the complex was used to calm the spirits of the killed Kumaso and Hayato . These were groups of people or peoples living in this region who were subjugated by the Japanese state in the 8th century.

On March 3, 1921, the facility was designated a National Historic Site; H. listed.

In 1998/1999 restoration work was carried out on the stone pagodas and figures.
