Structure and activity

The HeK (House of Electronic Arts Basel) is the national Swiss competence center for art forms that express themselves through new technologies and media and reflect them. With its interdisciplinary orientation, the HeK enables a broad public to gain insights into art productions of various genres in the discussion of art, media and technology.

The HeK is dedicated to digital culture and the new art forms of the information age. It is a place where creative and critical discourses about the aesthetic, sociopolitical and economic effects of media technologies take place. The HeK shows contemporary art that researches and designs new technologies; it promotes an aesthetic practice that uses information technology as a medium, makes it vivid and actively intervenes in its processes. The HeK is thus addressing pressing questions about the culture of the 21st century and actively contributing to its shaping.

As an interdisciplinary location, the institution deals with current art events in the visual arts, music, theater, dance, performance and design across all disciplines. It offers a broad public insights into art productions at the interface of art, media and technology. In a diverse program consisting of exhibitions, smaller festival formats, performances, concerts and educational offers, the house takes up current social issues and questions that arise from increasing digitalization.

In addition to the ongoing event and exhibition activities, the HeK deals with the collection methodology of digital art. With these tasks, the HeK has a unique position and a pioneering role in Switzerland. In close cooperation with artists, researchers and related initiatives and institutions at home and abroad, the house sees itself as a lively place for engaging with electronic art and digital culture - as a competence center for media art in Switzerland with links to global discourses .

The young institution, founded in 2011, is one of the pioneers on the Dreispitz area, a former bonded warehouse in Basel / Münchenstein. In October 2014 the HeK moved into the current premises at Freilager-Platz 9. The reopening of the house took place on November 21, 2014.

The HeK was created from a merger of [ plug.in ] forum for new media, a space for contemporary art and the discussion of media cultures, which existed from 2000 to 2011, and Shift - Festival of electronic art, which runs annually from 2007 to 2011 took place. The Pax Art Awards have been presented in the HeK since 2018 .

collection

In addition to exhibiting and organizing various events, HeK has a collection of works of art. The question of how digital works can be preserved plays a decisive role here. When selecting works for the collection, the focus is not specifically on technical formats, but on content-related issues related to a digitizing world. The HeK collection includes works by the following artists: Philipp Gasser , Yves Netzhammer , Hervé Graumann , Studer / van den Berg, Esther Hunziker , collectif_fact and Mélodie Mousset .
