[plug.in] was a media art company based in Basel . He organized exhibitions and events, carried out projects together with other institutions and carried out international networking for artists; Another task was to mediate between media art and the general public. In 2011 the [plug.in] was merged with the Festival of Electronic Arts Shift to form the House for Electronic Arts Basel .

The starting point for creating the [plug.in] was the noticeable lack of space for video art and new media in Basel since the late 1990s . Another deficit for artistic exchange was the end of the annual Basel Video Days after 1997. The canton of Basel-Stadt and the Christoph Merian Foundation carried out conceptual clarifications in parallel to support these art sectors and finally brought them together. The forum for new media association was founded in 1999 in order to sponsor the planned space with media art business. Since then, the running costs have been borne by the canton and the Christoph Merian Foundation. Related to these activities was the relocation of the Viper Festival from Lucerne to Basel.

The operating rooms opened in 2000 and were designed as a public living room with a bar and library. Around five exhibitions and forty events (presentations, performances, guided tours, lectures, etc.) on media art and digital culture were held annually with 7,000 visitors. Collaborations took place with Viper, HyperWerk , the University of Art and Design in Basel, the media studies seminar of the University of Basel , Point-de-vue , or xcult as well as cantonal museums.
