The Heads of Medicines Agencies ( HMA , English H eads of M edicines A gencies ) is established in 1995, merger of the national regulatory authorities for human and veterinary use in the European Economic Area (EEA) .
tasks
The aim of the HMA is to promote the exchange between the approval authorities of the member states in order to offer a central point within the drug approval system of the Community for the heads of the approval authorities as well as a forum for the exchange of information on topics of common interest.
According to its own description, the group is responsible for the following areas:
- Support the community by offering highly qualified scientific resources
- Formulation of balanced perspectives on the European procedures and their effects on the approval authorities of the member states
- Take the lead and oversee the mutual recognition procedures within the European system
- Elaboration and provision of practical solutions for problems of the member states arising within the system
- Provision of a communication medium between the competent authorities of the member states, the Commission and the EMEA.
organization
The group routinely meets twice during each Council Presidency , with the chair being passed to the Member State holding the Council Presidency and also providing the Secretariat. If this is not possible due to circumstances, the member states elect a chairperson and the secretariat. The heads of the competent authorities of the previous, current and future Council Presidencies are responsible for the continuity of work. The association currently includes 30 countries and over 40 licensing authorities.
The European Medicines Agency is a member of the HMA. The German organizations represented in the HMA are
- in the field of drugs for human use, the Federal Institute for Drugs and Medical Devices and the Paul Ehrlich Institute and
- for veterinary drugs, the Federal Office for Consumer Protection and Food Safety and the Paul Ehrlich Institute .
