Heart of Gold Band is an American country and folk rock band that emerged from the band Ghosts .
After the band “ Ghosts ” was founded in 1979 and performed gigs, it was renamed “ Heart of Gold Band ” in 1980 after a few changes in the line-up . The most famous members were the couple Keith and Donna Godchaux , who came from the so-called Grateful Dead family. So the name of the new band was based on the Dead song " Scarlet Begonias " penned by Robert Hunter and Jerry García , in which Heart of Gold Band is used twice.
The newly formed band first appeared when Keith Godchaux was killed in a car accident on July 21, 1980. A planned tour was canceled for the time being. The band was reorganized and with Mark Adler a new keyboardist and with David Mackay a new bass player and keyboard player engaged. Mackay and Donna Godchaux were later to get married. With this new line-up, the planned tour was carried out in 1981 and the material was released on various albums. But gradually the band sank into oblivion and was disbanded.
In 2004 Donna Godchaux reorganized the band again with a different line-up, which largely consisted of family members. Her son from her first marriage, Zion Rock Godchaux, and her son from her second marriage, Kinsman Mackay, now played in the band. Her husband David Mackay and her brother-in-law from her first marriage, Brian Godchaux, also belonged to the new line-up. The group was completed with Greg Anton and Mark Adler, who used to play in the band, and the newcomer Russ Randolph. With this line-up, the band released a new album in 2004, " At The Table ". Due to the solo projects of the sons and the participation of Donna Godchaux in the band Zen Tricksters , the re-formation fizzled out again.
