Heerhaufen , also Haufen or Haufe , is a name for unorganized or weakly organized paramilitary troops and auxiliary troops in Central Europe in the early modern period .

In the Peasant Wars and in the Thirty Years' War in particular , Haufe was the name of a congregation of several thousands of armed peasants or mercenaries , often with grassroots democratic features (cf. the ancient army assembly ), so more loosely organized than the smaller and strictly military ensign .

Cf. also the song known from the youth movement, Wir sind des Geyer's black heaps .
