STP is a brand and trade name for mineral oil additives and the performance division of Clorox Corporation.

It was founded in 1953 in Saint Joseph (Missouri) , Missouri . The name STP is derived from "Scientifically Treated Petroleum". The company's first product was STP Oil Treatment .

In 1961 the company was bought by the Studebaker-Packard Corporation . Studebaker incorporated STP as the acronym for "Studebaker Tested Products" in its advertising. The President of Studebaker-Packard, Sherwood Egbert , however, thought that STP could one day outdo its parent company and recruited Andy Granatelli as President of STP to make the product name better known. At that time, Granatelli, a well-known racing driver, also became the “face” of STP, often wore white overall with the red STP oval during races and issued thousands of oval STP stickers. Granatelli had placed two Novi Specials in the 1964 Indy 500 race; Jimmy Hurtubise and Bobby Unser were the drivers. There was a movie about the race that was mostly about the Novis . Studebaker stopped producing automobiles in 1966 and became an investment company, but STP's sales rose so much that the company was separated from the Studebaker-Worthington Corporation and floated on the stock exchange in 1969.

For a long time, STP sponsored the racing drivers Richard Petty and John Andretti , as well as the Indy driver Mario Andretti , John's uncle. The partnership ended shortly after the company was bought out by Clorox.

In autumn 2006, they began to STP fuel additives in gasoline from Marathon to use to communicate with the additive Techron by Chevron to compete.

Slogan

A slogan was sung to the melody of the Toreador from the opera Carmen :

STP, you need some STP
One little can will keep you running free
Smoother, cooler, quieter, longer too
"The Racer's Edge" was made for you
When engines need a friend, you must agree
That friend is STP
