The Packard Twelve is the name of a series of V12-cylinder automobiles that the Packard Motor Car Company in Detroit produced from 1933 to 1939 as the successor to the Twin Six model .

introduction

In 1933 Packard gave the twelve-cylinder Twin Six the more prestigious name "Twelve". The models 1005 and 1006 now had wheelbases of 3607 mm and 3734 mm, respectively.

The V12 engine was adopted unchanged from the previous model: its cylinder angle was 67 °, the bore was 87.3 mm and the stroke was 101.6 mm. This resulted in a displacement of 7300 cm³. The engine developed 160 bhp (118 kW) at 3200 rpm. The wet two-disc clutch of the predecessor gave way to a single-disc dry clutch that connected the engine to the manual three-speed gearbox with center shift. The mechanical four-wheel brakes were also adopted from the predecessor.

On the short chassis (model 1005) there was a Touring, a Phaeton, a Sport Phaeton, a sedan, a 4-door convertible, a club sedan, a 2-door convertible (Victoria) and a coupé-roadster, respectively for five passengers. In addition, various coupés and convertibles for 2-4 passengers were offered. On the long chassis there was a limousine and a Pullman limousine, as well as various special bodies, each for 5–7 passengers.

Year by year

In 1934, models with an even shorter wheelbase (3429 mm) were added to the 11th series. They were bodied as a sports coupé or as a "Runabout Speedster" (from LeBaron ). For the first time, there was also a radio as an optional extra.

In 1935, in the 12th series, the cylinder stroke of the twelve-cylinder was increased by 1/4 "to 108 mm, so that the displacement was now 7,708 cm³. It also got cylinder heads made of aluminum. The new engine continued to develop 175 bhp (129 kW) The gearbox was synchronized and the mechanical brakes and clutch were assisted by negative pressure from the engine. The new wheelbases were 3359 mm, 3537 mm and 3664 mm. In this version, the vehicles were also built in 1936 as the 14th series.

The model year 1937 brought the introduction of hydraulic brakes in the 15th series. The doors that had been hinged at the back gave way to those with a front stop for safety reasons.

The 16th series in 1938 brought new, shorter wheelbases: 3236 mm, 3414 mm and 3541 mm. The curved fenders looked a little chunkier than the previous year's model. With this equipment, the Twelve went into its last production year in 1939 as the 17th series. A steering wheel gearshift was available on request instead of the central gearshift.

The end

In the 1940 model year, the Twelve was no longer available. The last twelve-cylinder Packard had produced 5262 copies in seven years.

Trivia
