Packard Hawk
The Packard Hawk was one of four Packard automobiles made by the Studebaker-Packard Corporation in 1958. The original Packard Detroit facility was already leased to (and soon sold to) Curtiss-Wright , and the Packard models were all redecorated Studebaker models with a Packard nameplate. The Packard Hawk was actually a Studebaker Golden Hawk , which was slightly changed in shape and equipment.
Instead of the Studebaker's large, almost vertical radiator grille, the Packard had a wide, low fishmouth directly above the front bumper across the width of the vehicle. Above that there was a slightly sloping nose and a hood that was reminiscent of the 1953 Studebaker, but with a bulge like the Golden Hawk. Among them was the McCulloch radial compressor , with which the Studebaker V8 with a displacement of 4735 cm³ achieved an output of 275 bhp (202 kW). The sides of the tail fins were covered with metallized PET film , which gave them a metallic-gold appearance. A spare wheel cover (without a spare wheel underneath!) Adorned the trunk lid. The name PACKARD was enthroned in large letters on the front mask ; the Packard badge and the word Hawk were on the back of the trunk lid and tail fins.
The inside of the car was completely lined with leather and had all the instrumentation. As with old aircraft, there was a padded armrest outside the side window, a rare feature.
The styling of the car was discussed a lot and also described by some journalists as the "vacuum cleaner look". Only 558 units were built, although it may have played a certain role that the Packard brand's abandonment was already in the air. The Hawk was certainly the fastest Packard ever sold as it shared most of the components with the Studebaker Golden Hawk. The car was priced at $ 3,995, about $ 700 more than the Studebaker model, but with a more luxurious interior.
Its rarity and its status as the most respected of the "Packardbaker" in recent years have ensured that the Packard Hawk is very sought after among collectors. It achieves about twice the price of a corresponding Studebaker, although this is still low compared to the more well-known brands. Because the mechanics of the Studebaker were used, mechanical spares are easier to find than the rare body parts.
