SPA Truck Company

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The SPA Truck Company (SPA) was a truck manufacturer operated by Studebaker Corporation and its wholly-owned subsidiary Pierce-Arrow in Buffalo, New York. The name is derived from S tudebaker, P ierce and A rrow. The company manufactured trucks from 1929 to 1933.

Studebaker made his fortune building the Conestoga carriages , but they didn't start making trucks until late in 1929. At that time, Studebaker's factories were already operating close to capacity, and management wanted to use Pierce-Arrow's previously unused excess capacity for the production of load tags.

Studebaker also wanted to acquire the White Motor Company , a well-known heavy truck manufacturer in Cleveland, Ohio , in 1932 . White, however, did not consent to the deal in March 1933 and Studebaker sold Pierce-Arrow to a group of investors, which later went bankrupt and the company dissolved in 1938.

When Studebaker had to register a settlement in March 1933, SPA was liquidated and Studebaker concentrated on car production in the future; truck manufacture played only a subordinate role.
