The Packard Super Eight was the largest eight-cylinder passenger car manufactured by the Packard Motor Car Company in Detroit .

introduction

The first model of this name appeared in 1934 as part of the 11th series and had an in-line eight-cylinder engine with side-hung valves. It had a displacement of 6267 cm³ and developed 145 bhp (106.6 kW) at 3200 rpm. The engine power was transmitted to the rear wheels via a single-disc dry clutch and a manual three-speed gearbox with center shift. The car had mechanical four-wheel brakes. Chassis with three wheelbases - 3426 mm, 3604 mm and 3731 mm - were available, which were provided with various superstructures for 2 - 7 passengers.

Year by year

In 1935 the engine output was increased to 150 bhp (110 kW). The wheelbases of the 12th series were now 3353 mm, 3530 mm and 3658 mm. The 14th series in 1936 corresponded almost entirely to the 12th series.

In 1937 the 15th series came out with the smaller engine of the Eight model , which was incorporated into the Super Eight model. The engine had 5212 cc and made 135 bhp (99 kW) at 3200 rpm. For safety reasons, the front doors hinged at the back had to give way to those with a front stop.

In 1938, somewhat chunkier fenders were introduced with the 16th series; The models remained technically unchanged, but the engine output sank to 130 bhp (96 kW). Also in 1939 hardly any technical changes were made to the 17th series; however, the number of superstructures was reduced to just six and steering wheel gearshift was available.

After the 17th series Packard Twelve was discontinued in 1940, the name was passed on to Packard's two largest models, the 160 and the 180 . After the Second World War , the 180 model became the Packard Custom Eight and the slightly cheaper sister model 160 simply became the Packard Super Eight .

The entire Packard model range was given new names in 1951 (24th series); the Super Eight became the Packard 300 , the last in the long line of the Packard Super Eight.
