The Hegel-Gymnasium Magdeburg is located in the state capital of Saxony-Anhalt, Magdeburg . About 970 students, who are taught by 64 teachers, study at it.

history

With the beginning of the school year 1991/92 the structured school system was introduced in the united Germany in Saxony-Anhalt. In addition to eleven others, the magistrate of the city of Magdeburg had also planned the building of the polytechnic high school "Juri Gagarin" as a high school location. Almost 1,000 students applied for this new grammar school , including around 600 from the classes with extended Russian lessons at the Gagarin School and around 150 from the choir classes at the Hegel-Leibniz School. Most of the 65 teachers at this new school had previously taught at various Magdeburg schools. Sufficient teaching materials were available, but the traditional school building (the former cathedral grammar school) was in dire need of renovation.

After extensive debates and with the involvement of various committees, it was agreed that the school should be named after Georg Friedrich Hegel as Hegel-Gymnasium on April 1, 1993. On the other hand, the content had to be clarified. Since the majority of the students came from linguistic or music-oriented schools, the school profile should also correspond to this. Since 1991 there has been a musical branch at the Hegel-Gymnasium. The students of the so-called choir classes receive training in the subjects of voice training, speech training, music theory and choral conducting and form the renowned children's and youth choir of the city of Magdeburg, which is also successful beyond the national borders. Linguistic profiling should be achieved through a wide range of foreign languages. In addition to English as their first foreign language, students have the opportunity to learn French, Latin, Russian, Italian and Spanish. The demand for Russian has declined so much over the years that it is no longer available today. Linguistic profiling was continued with the introduction of a bilingual branch in 1995. This training is characterized by the fact that the students receive lessons in history and geography in English.

A solution to the building problem appeared as early as 1993. The city intended to rebuild the representative complex of the Bismarck and Viktoriaschule at the end of Hegelstrasse. Since the current school building was not far from this building complex and was too small for 1000 students, the Hegel-Gymnasium should be the new user after completion. In the first construction phase, the building of the former Viktoriaschule was renovated. After the inauguration, the 5th to 9th grades moved into the new school building on June 21, 1996 at the start of the school year. After two more years, the reconstruction of the Bismarck School was completed and the entire complex was essentially completed. So for the new school year 1998 a new domicile for the whole Hegel-Gymnasium was established.

The building was completed and completed by a garden architecture design of the inner courtyard with lots of green, but also sports facilities for the students.

The Hegel-Gymnasium is expanded to include four to five classes from grades 5–12. In each school year there is a choir class, a bilingual class and two "regular" classes.

All classes are taught on the basis of the mandatory lesson table for the state of Saxony-Anhalt . The additional lessons in the musical and bilingual train take place beyond the lesson table.

Musical branch

The musical branch includes grades 5–10. In each of these years a choir class with extended music lessons is formed. The pupils in these classes form the Magdeburg Children's and Youth Choir. The students are trained in music lessons and in choir rehearsals and performances outside of the curriculum.

In the weekly three-hour music lessons, the students receive training in voice and ear training, music theory, speaking training and choral conducting in addition to teaching the subjects of the framework guidelines for the subject of music.

The following degrees can be obtained:

  • Year 8: Basic level qualification in music theory,
  • Year 10: Choir director examination C1

Choir work

The work takes place in the sub-choirs small choir, successor choir, extra choir, selected choir, chamber choir, as well as with soloists and solo groups.

The weekly rehearsal work comprises a time volume of around two to five hours per student, depending on age and participation in different partial choirs. The highlights of the choral work are the annual Christmas and spring concerts, the choir free time in Zichtau and the trips by the selected choir to concerts and competitions at home and abroad.

Admission to the choir

Admission to the choir takes place at the beginning of the 4th grade. The application takes place within the 3rd school year. There is an aptitude test. Requirements for admission are a very good voice and, in most cases, very good academic performance. A group of class size is formed. If the participation in the choir is successful during the 4th school year and a school career recommendation for the grammar school is available, the students are automatically transferred to the 5th choir class of the Hegel grammar school, which is to be newly trained each school year. Remaining in the choir class and participation in the choir is compulsory up to and including class 10.

Bilingual branch

The bilingual branch includes grades 5–12. There is a bilingual class in each school year.

In grades 5 and 6, the number of hours per week in English increases by two to seven. Geography is taught in English from the seventh grade upwards. The number of hours per week increases by one hour. At the beginning of the 9th year, history is also taught in English. The number of hours per week also increases by one hour. Remaining in the bilingual class and bilingual lessons in history and geography is compulsory for all students up to and including the 10th grade.

In both course levels 11 and 12, lessons can be continued bilingually in both subjects. It is possible to take the Abitur examination in English in both history and geography.

Admission to the bilingual class takes place in class 5 on the basis of the grades in the semester report of the fourth class. However, only those students who have successfully registered at the Hegel-Gymnasium can be accepted. Experience shows that every year the number of registrations significantly exceeds the capacity. In this case, admission is based on a drawing of lots.
