Former orphanage and poor house, Emschestraße 38

The Heilig-Geist-Spital was a poor house and orphanage in the city center of Hattingen at Emschestrasse 38. It is located on the eastern part of the church square of the Church of St. Georg . The Hospital Order of the Holy Spirit built a hospital and inn here in 1474 on the basis of donations "in honor of God and the Holy Spirit and the patrons of St. George and Margaret ". It was administered by two guest masters who checked the need and encouraged those who were fit to work to help. The running costs were covered by public collections and pious foundations.

In 1780 the building was renovated. The poor house and orphanage operated until 1919. When it was dissolved, its residents were relocated to the Evangelical Hospital . The building was added to the list of architectural monuments in Hattingen on April 8, 1982 (A-055). Today it is a residential building.
