description

Detail of St. Barbara

The sculpture, created by an unknown artist, is made of limestone with a painting that has been partially preserved: the green of the martyr's palm , the red of the dress and the gold of the long, falling hair. Next to the saint there is a tower, the most famous attribute of St. Barbara. St. Barbara, with a round, doll-like face, has put part of her magnificent dress over her right arm.

The 1.40 m high and 63 cm wide sculpture of Barbara, standing upright and showing a slight swing of her hips, still shows traces of her work tools. The Amiens Cathedral has one of the earliest depictions of saints with hip movement of the 15th century. Unfortunately, the sculpture shows major damage: the right arm is missing and also part of the right half of the body. The recent additions to the flaws were removed during the last restoration. The almost as high ocher-colored tower has cracks and damage.
