The Heiligengeistkirche was an Evangelical Lutheran church in Hamburg-Barmbek .

history

The Holy Spirit Church was built in the years 1902/03 according to a design by Hugo Groothoff in neo-Gothic style and consecrated in December 1903. The location was the old village square in the center of the original Barmbek . The manor house of the upper elders had previously stood in this place .

During the Second World War , the church burned down completely in 1943 after bombing. Due to a lack of financial means, reconstruction with a shortened spire was not started until 1955. The new consecration took place on December 6, 1955. In the mid-1960s, the artist Anna Andersch-Marcus received the order for 50 lead-glazed windows.

In 2003, a building report determined that there was a considerable need for renovation; the costs were estimated at 2.8 million euros. Since the parish, the center of which had shifted to the Kreuzkirche after the merger of the three Alt-Barmbeck parishes in 2001 , could not finance this, the church was closed in 2004 and rededicated at the end of May 2005. In spring 2008 it was demolished except for a remainder of the eastern wing of the church. In the following months, a residential complex with a total of 49 newly built condominiums, 2 to 5 rooms, living areas of 57 to 153 m 2 and an underground car park ( Barmbeker tower house ) was built on the site, and what was left of the church was integrated into the new building.

The “Barmbeker Turmhaus” building project was accompanied by protests. Local residents collected signatures against the building and protested at meetings. Shortly after the facade was completed, strangers attached silver symbols and signs with spray cans to the top and highest point of the tower house, which were removed immediately before the scaffolding was dismantled.
