Heiligenvogt
The saints vogt , until August 1650 referred to as saints inspector, replaced the saints curator in the Württemberg office of Balingen after the Reformation, but no later than between 1569 and 1600 . He administered the church assets of all parishes of the Balingen office, with the exception of Balingen itself, and from 1778 to 1800 resided in a separate office building in Balingen, the Heiligenvogtei. The oldest official instruction known to him - called "State and Order" in the sources - dates back to 1607. The tasks of the Saint Bailiwick included the maintenance of the rectory, churches and schools and the care of the poor. The Heiligenvogtei was dissolved in 1827.
meaning
In the neighboring office of Rosenfeld , in the office of Tuttlingen and probably also in the office of Dornstetten, the individual rural locations were linked in the same way in a sacred vault, while such an institution did not exist in other offices in Old Württemberg . Here each place had its own care for saints. The town itself was excluded from the amalgamation of the municipalities of the Balingen district. She had assigned the saint's equipment to the hospital . The needs of the individual places were to be covered from the total assets of the Heiligenvogtei. Before the thought that the stronger must help the weaker, better coping with the tasks should be guaranteed. Over time, the total assets of the Heiligenvogtei were not sufficient for this, so that the communities had to contribute or even advance funds, which they were only partially replaced. In the history of the primary school system in Altwuerttemberg (1927) it is positively noted that according to a compilation from 1735 there were only 3 with 22 places in the area of the Heiligenvogtei Balingen without a school house .
Constitutive defects
The participating communities were dissatisfied with the laboriousness and cost of the office early on. This is shown by numerous complaints about the personal conduct of the saint inspectors. It was less the expense of paying it than current and one-off construction charges, whereby the purchase of the Heiligenvogtei apartment in 1778 was one of the larger expenses. So it was more of an official regulatory rule than a voluntary association. This also shows the way in which the inspectors of saints were appointed. Around 1620, the bailiff was appointed by the (noble) bailiff, the special and the subordinate, examined by the church council and confirmed and sworn in the upper council. It was not until 1705 that “all of the village bailiffs” and the mayor, who was not involved, as well as the court of the city of Balingen were involved in his appointment. The appointment of an applicant was not made voluntarily either, but on the ducal order and in the event that the position was completed, three further personnel alternatives had to be named in Stuttgart. Although the local keeper of saints, like the bailiff, had a key to the "cash register" that could only be opened with both keys, his relationship with the bailiff remained subordinate. He was referred to in the sources as a "servant" or "servant". And only from time to time did the parishes involved come together for a meeting of the bailiffs.
inventory
The archives of the Heiligenvogtei, a closet with heavy iron doors, was housed in the choir of the town church in Balingen. It was used to store documents, stock books and annual accounts.
