The museum Banfetal in Banfe is a museum of local history and traditions. It is run by the Wander- und Heimatfreunde Banfetal.

Foundation and building

The museum was founded in 1965. It is housed in a half-timbered house from 1793.

Exhibitions

The following collection focuses are presented on approximately 800 m² of exhibition space:

  • Prehistory and early history
  • Rural living and working world
  • Housekeeping and self-sufficiency
  • Crafts (village blacksmiths, cartwright, cooperage, shoemaking, tailoring, carpenter)
  • Industry, steelworks, mining with mineral collection and exhibition tunnels
  • Children's world and school class, forestry and nature, technology.

An East German Heimatstube is also on display. This exhibition was founded in 1985 and was compiled with material from displaced persons from Silesia, Pomerania and Prussia.

Concept and special features

The concept envisages “making the story tangible”. In November 2014, for example, previously unseen shots of the opening of the Rothaargebirge Nature Park with Federal President Heinrich Lübke in 1964 were shown.
