history

New location in Seelze

The museum association found new rooms in the historic half-timbered building "Alter Krug" in Seelze. The museum reopened in autumn 2018.

From 1991 to 2018 in letter

The by autumn 2018 used by the museum building in the street in the sand in the district Seelzes Letter in 1856 for a shoemaker as a four-column - half-timbered house built and is an architectural monument . In 1991 the city of Seelze designed rooms for the museum in this house.

Since then, the Museum Association for the City of Seelze eV, founded in the same year, has been running the museum after setting up the rooms as a museum. The members of the museum association, grants from the city of Seelze as well as company and citizen donations enable museum work. As early as 1964, collections of local historical importance found a museum location in a home parlor in the then still independent town of Letter. After further stations, the half-timbered house was found in Letter for 27 years

Former permanent exhibition in letter

In some of the rooms on the ground floor the half-timbering that forms the framework of the house can still be seen in places. Behind the glazed Groot Dör there is a large hall.

Good room

A living room in the style of the time around 1900 was furnished with furniture, curtains, pictures, dishes, cloakroom and other inventory in the style of petty bourgeois residents. Civil weddings have been held in this room since 2001.

Shoemaker's workshop

A shoemaker's workshop showed exhibits from the beginning of the 20th century. The shoemaker's sewing machine was not yet equipped with an electric motor. A kerosene lamp served as lighting, the light of which is bundled with the help of a glass ball so that the Schumacher could see better at his workplace. This is the cobbler ball . Certificates of the shoemaker's qualifications and an old price list were just as missing as wooden nails, leather, soles and other shoemaker's supplies.

Hair salon

The establishment of a hairdressing salon dates from around 1920. The long leather used to sharpen the razor hung on the wall. The electrically operated heating hoods for burning in the perms were ready. In front of the customers there were sinks for washing their hair.

Village schoolroom

The pupil's benches and seats, the teacher's standing desk and the blackboard all date from around 1900. The panels and maps on the wall were created at a time when the Mittelland Canal had not yet been built by Seelze. In this room there were regular school lessons for pupils of the Seelz elementary schools, in which the today unknown German cursive script, the script of their great-grandparents, was taught and practiced. A pen was used to write on slate boards. Five volunteers slipped into the role of teachers 100 years ago. Couples with a large number of guests could also marry in this room. About every fourth wedding took place in Letter in the Heimatmuseum.

Life in Seelze

From the beginning of the settlement - with finds from early history - to the present, the part of the permanent exhibition under the heading "Life in Seelze" was dedicated to the history of the city of Seelze and its eleven districts. Topics were "Beginnings and early settlement history" and "Traditional agriculture and rural housekeeping". Under "Change in the 19th and 20th centuries" the industrial revolution with the settlement of a chemical factory, the development of Seelze into an important railway settlement and the immigration of displaced persons and refugees after the Second World War were dealt with.

Museum days

On museum days in summer, craftsmen demonstrate how they work in front of the museum, and sometimes visitors let them try their skills. Most of the craftsmen's products can be bought. The respective special exhibition in the museum is open. Food and drink stands and music performances invite you to linger.

Museum Association

All activities in the museum are organized by members of the Museum Association for the City of Seelze eV, from the conception of the exhibitions and their design to the procurement of exhibits, to the guided tours for interested parties and groups to supervision on opening Sundays. The members of the museum association are also responsible for managing the funds, soliciting donations, writing texts for the exhibitions, the basic graphic design of media such as information boards and their implementation, as well as assembling, dismantling and managing the museum items in storage. The museum director also comes from among the members of the association. In recent years these have been Karl-Heinz Pfeiffer and Erika Turek. Heinz Gehrke is currently the exhibition manager. The museum association organizes excursions for its members every year. The goals are “places with an eventful past”. On the occasion of its 25th anniversary, the association issued a publication "Memories and Balance Sheet" in 2016.
