The local history museum of the city of Marsberg in the former school in Obermarsberg is part of the Hochsauerlandkreis museum landscape , the sponsor of the voluntary museum is the city of Marsberg .

The opening year of the local history museum cannot be precisely determined. In the 1930s, Provost Ludwig Hagemann (historian) began collecting for a local history museum, which he then founded in 1935. It remains unclear whether this year of foundation is synonymous with the opening year.

The present museum and library building was built in 1910, its facade has been a listed building since 1987.

The museum presents the geological history and landscape formation of the Marsberg area, the Marsberg Stone Age (cave bear skeleton) as well as the Marsberg city history and the history of Horhusen (today Marsberg) and Obermarsberg. Furthermore, the works from the sculptures Papen and Larenz, textile house work from the raw fiber to the linen shirt, the Marsberg Baroque, old household appliances from the 19th century (focus on the tin collection) and objects from the areas of customs and popular piety (cross collection and art objects of historicism) shown.

As part of a project for the digitization of objects from museums of the Association of Westphalian Museums, numerous exhibits of the museum were digitized and entered into an object portal.
