Branch church Schöneben

The Roman Catholic branch church of Schöneben , also known as the Church of the Homeland, or the Bohemian Forest Church , is located in Schöneben in the Ulrichsberg municipality in Upper Austria, near the Czech border. She is St. Maria on the flight to Egypt and belongs to the parish church Ulrichsberg in the diocese of Linz .

history

The residents of the remote villages of Sonnenwald and Schöneben in the upper Mühlviertel went to church services at the nearby Glöckelberg church in the Czech Republic because of the great distance to their parishes in Aigen and Ulrichsberg . This was no longer possible after 1945 because the border with Czechoslovakia was closed. Therefore, holy masses were celebrated by the Ulrichsberg pastor Evermond Groß in the elementary school Schöneben, and his successor dean Josef Lorenz had a church built in Schöneben.

Between 1960 and 1961 the church, which was co-financed by donations from the local population as well as those from Glöckelberg and other Šumava expellees, was built by the Linz cathedral master builder Gottfried Nobl .

A memorial with a plaque and a large iron cross was erected between the church and the street for the deceased Šumava people. In 2016 the church was renovated by the Austrian Association of Comradeships.
