Heinrich Lübke House

The Heinrich-Lübke-Haus in Sundern - Enkhausen is a museum and a memorial dedicated to the former Federal President Heinrich Lübke . It should not be confused with the house of the same name in Günne am Möhnesee.

After Lübke's death, the institution was founded in 1975 at the initiative of his widow Wilhelmine Lübke . The house, which formerly housed the local school, is borne by the city of Sundern. Memorabilia, documents, photographs, gifts from state visits and awards from Lübke are displayed in several rooms. Large photo collages with historical photos from his tenure are striking. In the house there is a gallery of heads of state with whom Lübke met. The exhibition was designed by Hugo Borger , the former director of the Roman-Germanic Museum in Cologne . The father's profession is also visualized in the form of a cobbler's table.

In the course of time, memorabilia of his brother, the former Minister-President of Schleswig-Holstein , Friedrich-Wilhelm Lübke , were added. The regional original Elisabeth Agnes Becker , also known as a butter bed , is also discussed.

However, the attraction of the house is low. The number of visitors was only around 1,000 a year at the end of the 1980s. This made it one of the most heavily subsidized museums in Germany in terms of the subsidy per ticket. The city of Sundern spent around 10,000 marks annually to commemorate its great sons. Today around 300 people come during this period.

The first incumbent Theodor Heuss is remembered in Brackenheim , apparently with more resonance.

As her husband's heir, Wilhelmine Lübke left the souvenirs of the city of Sundern. However, there is no written contract on this. After the widow's death, a community of heirs made up of nieces and nephews from Lübke claimed the pieces in order to exhibit them elsewhere (at Arras Castle ).

Directly across the street is the Enkhausen cemetery, where the Lübke family's grave is located.
