The Theodor Heuss Museum in Brackenheim

The Theodor Heuss Museum in Brackenheim houses an exhibition on the life and work of the first Federal President Theodor Heuss , who was born in Brackenheim on January 31, 1884.

exhibition

Individual exhibits from the years in office as Federal President and life's work as a politician and statesman, journalist and writer are shown . Numerous display boards provide information about the life and work of the man who was also a political scientist and a member of the Reichstag in the first half of the 20th century . In 1942, at the time of National Socialism, however , the rulers forbade German newspapers to print texts by Heuss on instructions from Adolf Hitler. But he continued to write under pseudonyms. Biographies appeared under their own full author name. After the Second World War , Heuss designed the office of Federal President without any guidelines and shaped it for the successors in office. There are four areas for visitors:

  • In the vaulted cellar, display boards and a video film give an insight into Theodor Heuss's environment, which shaped his regional identity: his childhood in Brackenheim at the end of the 19th century, the close relationship with the Zabergäus landscape , Heilbronn and viticulture. His early literary-philosophical interests and social awareness are also discussed.
  • On the ground floor, a picture and sound collage recalls the life of Theodor Heuss from an autobiographical perspective. Different levels of a multi-faceted personality with their interests and work in history and literature, journalism and philosophy , art and political science , society and family are illustrated.
  • On the upper floor, a video presentation in widescreen format shows the President of the young Federal Republic of Germany. Theodor Heuss is honored biographically by his successors Walter Scheel , Richard von Weizsäcker and Roman Herzog . The focus is on its historical and political achievement and its formative role in the development of the young West German state. One of the exhibits is the armchair that the first Federal President had made for his study. It was owned by the Office of the Federal President from 1950 to 1974 and came to the museum on January 31, 2004, the 120th birthday of Theodor Heuss.
  • The museum's seminar room is located on the top floor and is occasionally used for weddings and conferences. A collection of books, documents and publications by Theodor Heuss is also kept there.

The exhibition opened in this form in 2000. Since then, over 50,000 visitors have been recorded.

The Heinrich-Lübke-Haus in Enkhausen in the Sauerland is less popular.

building

In the museum building, the Obertorhaus , the prison of the Württemberg Oberamt Brackenheim used to be housed. The interior of the completely gutted building has been completely redesigned and tailored to the needs of the museum. In 1968 the first memorial for Theodor Heuss was set up there in Brackenheim.

Opposite the entrance is a life-size bronze figure of the Federal President, made by Karl-Henning Seemann for Heuss' 125th birthday on January 31, 2009. Near the museum is a memorial stone with a plaque attached to the place where the house where he was born by Theodor Heuss. This was demolished in 1951 in order to build a building for the winegrowers' cooperative. Heuss gave his consent for this and was later several times a guest in the “tasting room”. That was more important to him than (quote :) "... romantic fame in reserve."
