The Heinrich-von-Stephan- Community School is a reform pedagogical school in the Berlin district of Moabit . It is named after the general postal director Heinrich von Stephan (1831-1897). In the 2017/2018 school year, 663 pupils attended the school. The school is one of the most popular secondary schools in Berlin.

history

From 1892 to 1894, the city of Berlin built a school complex at Stephanplatz for the 168th and 182nd Evangelical Community Schools and the 189th Catholic Community Schools. At the time, the triple school with 36 classes was one of the largest educational institutions in Berlin. It is a listed building monument.

It was not until 1950 that the three schools became the Heinrich von Stephan School, which was run as a pure secondary school until the early 1990s . Then the school staff began to develop a new school concept and achieved that the school was the first Berlin school to be allowed to convert into an integrated secondary school.

In 2008 the school took part in the “pilot phase of the community school ” and was supplemented by an upper school level in the 2013/2014 school year . The resulting increased space requirement made a move to a larger school building necessary. The school has therefore been located at Neues Ufer 6 since 2010. Since the 2016/2017 school year, the school has also had a basic level. The required new classrooms were created by a modular extension building ( MEB ) in 2018. Since July 2017 the school has been officially called Heinrich von Stephan Community School. Another school extension building with classrooms, sports area, cafeteria, kitchen and youth leisure facility is still in the planning phase.

concept

The school is a bound all-day school and a reform-pedagogical community school. The concept of the school includes, among other things:

  • 7th / 8th Class and 9th / 10th Class are taught across grades.
  • The day begins with a morning circle, called a meeting in upper school.
  • There is an active break every day during which the students have to choose a sporting activity.
  • Time structure model for the whole day, which u. a. the rhythm of the day - the alternation between tension and relaxation.
  • There are learning workshops for several hours in class every school week.
  • The second foreign languages ​​French and Spanish are offered as a four-hour elective from year 7.
  • Annual Challenge Week - Schoolchildren set themselves a challenge of their own choosing.
  • In the 7th and 8th grades, the subject economics-work-technology (WAT) takes place.
  • There is an annual farming week in Gatow.
