Heinrich Christian Michael Rettig
Heinrich Christian Michael Rettig (born July 30, 1795 in Gießen ; † March 24, 1836 in Zurich ) was a German classical philologist and Protestant theologian .
Career
After attending grammar school in his hometown, Rettig studied philology and theology at the Ludwigs-Universität Gießen . He then taught at grammar school and university, since 1829 as a private lecturer. He wrote scientific studies on philology and theology, especially on the Gospels, the Revelation of John and the Platonic philosophy. In his pamphlet, published in Gießen in 1832, The Free Protestant Church or the Church Constitutional Principles of the Gospel , he advocated the separation of church and state. The following year he was appointed full professor of theology at the newly founded University of Zurich , where he served as rector in 1835 and died shortly afterwards.
