Heinrich Hellstern (born December 12, 1902 ; † December 23, 1984 in Zurich ) was a Swiss Protestant Reformed pastor and development worker .

Live and act

Hellstern studied Protestant theology and was ordained pastor of the Evangelical Reformed Church .

Between 1944 and 1946, the Assembly of Representatives of the Federation of Swiss Protestant Churches organized an aid operation by the Protestant Reformed churches in favor of the Protestant sister churches in the European war countries. Pastor Heinrich Hellstern was commissioned as a full-time secretary to organize the "Protestant church aid and reconstruction work".

Hellstern is considered to be the inventor of "Bread for All", although initially he did not believe in the development aid of the rich countries of the north,

... because we cannot change the dire need with a voluntary collection and a private aid organization. The peoples must share the goods of the earth more fairly, "

was his opinion. Together with Hermann Witschi from the Basel Mission , on a trip to the Congo River, he developed the idea of a national campaign with the appeal: “ Bread for Brothers ”.

In 1959, as director of the Swiss Protestant Churches' relief organization (HEKS), he initiated the formation of the "Nettur Technical Training Institute", which was continued in 1963 under the new name "Nettur Technical Training Foundation".

At a conference of the Evangelical Academy of the Zurich Church in Boldern, he discussed with Hans Jakob Rinderknecht , the responsible director in Boldern and August Baenziger and others at his side, the creation of a house of encounters in Japan in order to promote the partnership between the Japanese and the Swiss : the "Swiss East Asia Mission" in Kyoto or: "Kyoto International Student House".

At the 5th All- Christian Peace Assembly in June 1978, Hellstern was elected one of the honorary presidents of the Christian Peace Conference.
