Heinrich Pera

Heinrich Pera (* 1938 in Magdeburg ; † March 2, 2004 ) was a German Catholic priest . Pera is considered to be the pioneer of the hospice movement in the GDR in the 1980s.

Life

Ordained a priest in Magdeburg in 1966 , Heinrich Pera then became vicar in Merseburg for six years . He got to know the hospice idea in 1968 through contacts with Polish doctors and pastors. From 1974 he was a hospital chaplain at the St. Elisabeth Hospital in Halle (Saale) . He also trained as a nurse. In 1978 Pera founded the advice center for people in crisis situations there. During a visit to St Christopher's Hospice in London in 1985, he met its director Cicely Saunders and the hospice movement in England. In the same year, Pera initiated an outpatient hospice service in Halle. From 1990 he worked as one of the fathers and co-founders of the Bundesarbeitsgemeinschaft Hospiz eV, which later became the German Hospice and Palliative Association . From 1992 to 1997 he was its chairman. In 1993 he founded Germany's first day hospice in Halle, which has been under one roof since 1996 together with an inpatient hospice and an outpatient hospice service. The building is located on the street that has been named after him since 2011.

Pera's grave is in the Laurentius cemetery in Halle.

Heinrich Pera Prize

The Heinrich Pera hospice and palliative center, a merger of the three facilities Hospiz Halle am St. Elisabeth-Krankenhaus gGmbH, Elisabeth Mobil and Krankenhaus St. Elisabeth and St. Barbara Halle (Saale) GmbH, has been awarding the Heinrich Pera every year since 2016 -Price. With the award of the prize, the partners of the center honor people who have made a special contribution to promoting the concept of hospice and palliative care and its development, strengthening and anchoring in the consciousness of society.
