Heinz Valk (actually Heinrich Valk ; born March  7, 1936 in Krasnogwardeisk ) is an Estonian artist and politician.

Heinz Valk was born as the son of Aleksander (1892–1947) and Sinaida Valk (1902–1991) in Gatchina near Leningrad . He graduated from school in the Estonian capital Tallinn in 1954 . From 1955 to 1961 he studied at the Estonian SSR State Art Institute in Tallinn, now the Estonian Art Academy . He received his degree in Toreutics .

Heinz Valk was best known for his book illustrations. He is also one of the most popular caricaturists in Estonia.

In 1988 Heinz Valk was one of the founders of the Estonian opposition movement Rahvarinne . She campaigned for democratic reforms, the separation of Estonia from the Soviet Union and the restoration of Estonian independence. On September 11, 1988, around 300,000 people demonstrated at the Tallinn Singing Stage for changes in Estonia as part of the “ Singing Revolution ”. In his speech, Heinz Valk coined one of the popular slogans of peaceful resistance against Soviet rule: “One day we'll win anyway!” (Ükskord me võidame niikuinii!) .

From 1994 to 2009 Valk belonged to the Estonian Center Party (Eesti Keskerakond) .

Private life

Heinz Valk was married to his fellow student Mall Valk-Sooster (1935–1976) in his first marriage. After her death from cancer, he married the art historian Marika Valk (* 1954). Heinz Valk is the father of three daughters.
